How to Support Indie Through Social Media

If you have just discovered the amazing talent found in the indie world, this article is for you. Read on to find out how you can support your favorite indie authors, musicians, and more.

  • Share, share, share. One of the best ways you can show your support to the indie community is to share their work throughout different social media outlets. This is often the only way someone new to the indie world can get his or her name out there. Think about a video gone viral, how did this come about? It was shared and spread through social media platforms and continued to be viewed a substantial amount of times as a result. It only takes a moment to share someone’s work, and it could make all the difference in the world. *Extra Tip: When sharing, add your own personalized message expressing why your friends/followers should check out this indie work.

  • Like/follow their social media pages. Okay, this is obvious, but still a good point to make. High volumes of likes/follows can represent to new viewers that an indie author, musician, etc. has quality work that is worth keeping track of. It’s also encouraging to anyone in the indie community to see that we have people supporting us. With each new like/follow we know that we are reaching a wider audience.

  • Take part in polls and interactive questions. When, for example, an indie author presents a poll or asks a question, give your input. We want to hear from you, as this helps us to improve our quality of work and find out what followers will respond to.

  • Send a direct message. What was most encouraging to me when I first started on my indie journey was the support I received through kind direct messages on Twitter. You could send something simple like: ‘I just wanted you to know I love what you’re doing, and look forward to your future work’ A message like this is encouraging it let’s us know we are doing something right, and on a bad day it could be the only thing that keeps us going. If you want to take another angle you could send a message like this: ‘I enjoy the work you are doing. Is there anything I can do to show my support?’ This opens up an opportunity for us to let you know what our focus is. This could be as simple as sharing a post, or rating and reviewing one of our products. *Not everyone in the indie community enjoys direct messages, but overall I have found friendly people who enjoy knowing they are supported in their dreams.

  • Invite your friends to like/follow. I want to make clear that I am in no way saying be that annoying person that invites everyone on their friends list to like a page. What I am pointing out is if you check something indie out, and happen to know someone who might enjoy it, invite them to like the page. As an indie fan, I often browse through indie pages. I might come across something that’s not my cup of tea, but I have a friend who would like it so I invite them. In this way I can still show my support for quality indie work.

Is there anything you would add to this list? Feel free to Tweet how you show your support through social media @caravana_kersey using #supportindie. If you enjoyed this show your support by sharing it on a social media outlet. To keep up with all things indie subscribe to my blog here.
